I must be honest, when entourage-the movie came out in May I was interested in watching it. The trailer looked cool but there was one problem, I hadn’t watched the series. Everybody knows there is no point in watching a movie if you don’t like its series. So I decided to watch the pilot then take it from there, before I knew it, it was four days later and I was neck deep in season 5. Yes, I binge watched. It was that good.
Before i continue, let me just mention that actors love movies/shows about actors. We always play lawyers, doctors, pilots, gym instructors etc but rarely do we play actors. That’s why ‘Birdman’ was such a success. It was an actor playing an actor. I never really liked Kristen Stewart but when she played an actor in ‘Still Alice’ I automatically became a fan. Also part of the reason why I like ‘Penny’ from ‘the big bang theory’
That aside, entourage is a show revolving around an actor and his posse. It shows you what the real Hollywood looks like but in a comedic way. It deals with the business side of acting. From contracts to deals to studio heads to publicists you name it. A producer friend of mine told me “every serious actor must watch this show” I agree and anyone in showbiz as well. It’s for your own good. Even if you’re not in the industry, watch it. It’s a funny show. Everyone likes a good laugh, no?
About the movie. Well, people say that it’s better not to make a movie from a series coz usually the results are disastrous… if ‘sex and the city’ is anything to go by. I agree. I mean, some things are better left untouched. It’s like making a ‘Sopranos’ movie or making a series out of ‘the Godfather’. Unacceptable. This time though, I have to admit, making the entourage movie was a brilliant idea. It was even better for me coz I finished the series and watched the movie immediately. I felt the movie brought closure. Season eight ended with many unanswered questions. What I loved the most was how Johnny (Drama) Chase’s character was developed in the movie. If you have been watching the show you know that Drama has always been in the shadow of his younger brother Vincent. The guy could just not catch a break. He represented what most struggling actors go through and for him to finally win a Golden Globe was just too surreal, a dream come true. I know it’s just a movie but I cried. I couldn’t believe he won. All the pain, failed auditions, embarrassments and finally VICTORY! There was no better ending. E had a baby and started a family with Sloan. Turtle made a name for himself and became a millionaire. Ari got back with his wife and is looking at becoming a studio head again after getting fired and Vincent Chase remains the handsome super rich movie star he always has been. The series is known to star celebrities making cameos portraying fictionalized versions of themselves and the movie was no different. This time they even had Warren Buffet. I know, right?
Some people I spoke to didn’t like the movie but I give it a solid 10/10. Is my rating biased? OF COURSE IT IS it’s a movie about actors rated by an actor! On a serious note though, this is a brilliant film. I’d watch it again if ‘Broad City’ wasn’t eating too much into my TV time. Here is the entourage trailer.
Oh! and one last thing… VICTORY!!!
Epic Line: I didn’t hire you because you can act, I hired you because you’re a movie star!
Ari Gold to Vincent Chase (Entourage)
